Motorhomes are enjoying an unprecedented boom in popularity as holidaymakers try to cut costs in the recession.

Motorhome hire firms say business has risen by 50 per cent compared with last year while manufacturers report sales and orders up by around 15 per cent.

The figures come on Bank Holiday weekend - which also marks the start of the half term break - as thousands of mobile homes head out onto Britain's roads. Figures from the Camping and Caravanning Club show that bookings for motorhomes at its 109 sites this week are up by 38 per cent on last year - a larger increase than for tents and caravans. Jon Dale, spokesman for the club, which has 500,000 members, said: "People don't have as much disposable income and so they are looking for cheaper alternatives to going abroad or staying in a hotel or bed and breakfast."
